Shopify Conversion Rate: What Is Good and How to Improve It

There is no honest universal good Shopify conversion rate. Use Shopify’s reported rate or orders/sessions, segment, then improve facts, shipping, speed, and trust.

There is no honest universal “good” Shopify conversion rate. Catalogs, price points, traffic quality, country, device mix, and whether you sell replenishable soap or a $2,000 made-to-order piece do not share a number. FACTASH will not publish an industry-average conversion percentage as a fact, and you should not paste one into a board deck from a blog. What you can do is define the metric, segment it, and improve the store with a process—not a benchmark table.

Shopify design, theme development, and redesign that remove conversion blockers are a build job when the Theme editor is not enough. That offer is at the end of this page.

Quick answer

Pick one definition. Shopify’s reported rate (behavior / conversion reports) is the share of sessions that completed checkout. You may instead use orders ÷ sessions; say which, because they diverge. Segment by device, channel, new vs returning. Improve product facts, shipping honesty, speed, and trust, then run a CRO loop: product pages, descriptions, checkout, Core Web Vitals, CRO framework. Numbers: Shopify Analytics. Do not scale ads before launch.

Define the rate (Shopify vs napkin math)

Ecommerce conversion rate in plain language is “what share of visits became orders.” Two honest ways to operationalize that on Shopify:

  1. Shopify’s reported rate — Help’s conversion-over-time style reports: conversion = share of sessions that completed checkout (purchase). This is the number on many admin cards. Use it when you are talking about Shopify Analytics.
  2. Orders ÷ sessions — count paid orders in the period divided by Online Store sessions. Useful when finance thinks in orders. It is not always the same as (1).

GA4 has its own session and purchase rules. After GA4 setup, do not average Shopify and GA4 into a “true CR.” Pick a source per meeting.

Refunds, tips, and draft orders can confuse revenue; conversion here is did a session become a purchase, not margin. Password-on traffic is not a conversion program.

Why “good” cannot be a single number

A returning customer on desktop hitting a replenishment SKU will convert higher than a cold paid-social click on mobile to a first-time brand. Branded search converts differently from prospecting. International sessions that cannot ship will not convert. Wholesale sessions that bounce to a form are not “failed DTC conversion.” Mixing them into one headline rate is how teams chase ghosts.

Your good rate is: this segment, this period, higher than last period after a change you can name, without a collapse in refunds or contribution margin. That is it.

Segment or do not bother

Pull conversion (or orders and sessions) split by:

  • Device — mobile vs desktop. Most stores are mobile-heavy; a desktop-only theme is a conversion bug. See mobile-friendly store.
  • Channel / UTM — email vs paid social vs organic vs direct. Fix the worst large slice first.
  • New vs returning — returning should usually convert higher; if it does not, accounts, reorder, or trust is broken.
  • Landing page — homepage vs product vs collection. Product-page failure is a catalog job, not a “Meta is expensive” job.

If the sample is tiny (a handful of orders), wait. Percentages on 40 sessions are noise.

How to improve it (process, not a league table)

Work the CRO growth framework: baseline, one change, same definition, keep or revert.

Product facts. Working variants, scale photos, copy that says what it is. A missing size is a 0% SKU. Product pages, store design, UX.

Shipping honesty. Product-page rate must match checkout. Cart.

Speed. Slow mobile LCP taxes every session: Core Web Vitals, too many apps.

Trust. Real policies, contact, no stock lies: important pages, checkout.

Ads that promise a price you do not offer are not a CRO problem. Retargeting into a broken PDP is wasted.

What not to do

Do not publish an “industry average” you cannot source from your admin. Do not change theme, apps, and offer in one weekend. Do not optimize only the homepage. Do not double-fire purchase to force GA4 to match Shopify.

What to do next

Write the formula on a sticky note. Screenshot this week’s Shopify reported conversion and orders ÷ sessions by device. Fix the largest honest blocker on the product page or shipping. Then run the CRO loop. Hub: Shopify 101 category. Marketing around a store that already converts: marketing complete guide.

Shopify design, development, and redesign

Theme tweaks are merchant work. Persistent conversion blockers—templates that fight the catalog, mobile navigation that hides add-to-cart, collection UX, performance—often need Shopify design, development, or a redesign. AalphaLeo Digital Solutions builds and redesigns Shopify storefronts (Online Store 2.0 sections, custom templates, development when the Theme Store is not enough). Publisher of FACTASH. Frequently asked questions

What is a good conversion rate for Shopify?

There isn’t a single honest number for all stores. Use your Shopify reported rate or orders ÷ sessions, segmented, and improve from your baseline. Anyone selling you “the average is X%” as a universal target is simplifying for clicks.

Does Shopify use orders divided by sessions?

Shopify’s conversion reports are described as the share of sessions that resulted in a purchase (sessions that completed checkout ÷ sessions). Orders ÷ sessions is a separate calculation you can do from the same period. Use one label per conversation.

Will a new theme increase conversion?

Only if the current templates block facts, trust, or the path to cart. A visual refresh with the same shipping surprise will not. Test jobs, then theme or templates.

Should I compare myself to GA4’s ecommerce conversion?

You may watch GA4 for trends on Google-tagged traffic. Do not treat a gap vs Shopify as a store failure until duplicates and consent are ruled out. Do not “fix” it with two purchase tags.
