A Shopify product page is one URL that should help a shopper evaluate this item. SEO work here is a specific title, a stable handle, original description, honest media with alt text, and accurate price and availability. It is not twelve URLs for twelve sizes. Search engines still choose whether to index or how to display the page.
This tutorial is the product-page path. Field-level operator depth (variants, structured data, feeds, crawl paths) is already written—do not treat this article as a rewrite: Shopify SEO checklist for category and product pages. Quick answer
Open the product. Set a customer-recognizable title (usually the H1). Write an original description—not the manufacturer paste every reseller uses. Edit Search engine listing: distinct page title, accurate meta description, short handle. Add alt text that describes each informative image. Keep size/color as variants on this product, not a new product URL per option unless the item is truly a different product. Publish to the Online Store and link the product from a real collection. Shopify generates the sitemap; indexing is not guaranteed. See finding your sitemap.
Title (storefront and search listing)
The product title is what shoppers see on the page and in the cart. Shopify commonly uses it as the H1—confirm in your theme; keep one primary H1.
Make it specific: brand, model, material, or type when that distinguishes the item. Avoid keyword lists, unexplained internal codes, and near-identical names that hide which variant someone is looking at.
Separately, edit Search engine listing → Page title. It can differ from the product title when you need a clearer search result line. Shopify warns that long titles can be cut off. Search engines may rewrite them. Front-load the identifying words. Keyword placement: Shopify adding keywords and Shopify keyword research (one primary topic per URL).
Handle (URL)
The handle is the last part of /products/your-handle. Leave it alone unless you have a URL plan. Readable, short, stable. If you change a live handle, keep Shopify’s redirect option selected unless you have a deliberate reason not to, then update important internal links.
Do not encode every synonym in the slug. That is stuffing in the URL.
Description (unique copy, not manufacturer paste)
Shopify’s product details documentation advises resellers not to use a manufacturer’s exact description. Unique wording helps the page be understood as your listing. Unique text by itself is not a ranking guarantee.
Write who it is for, what it does, specs, what is in the box, care or compatibility, and shipping/return facts that belong on the product (or link your policy pages). Put critical facts in visible HTML, not only in a PDF or an app tab that never renders.
Full writing method: how to write product descriptions that sell. Conversion layout (not this job): high-converting product pages.
Alt text and images
For each informative image, write alt text that describes what is visible in context. Leave alt empty on purely decorative images. Do not stuff keywords. File weight and crops: how to optimize Shopify product images.
The primary image should match the selected variant when color or style changes what the shopper sees.
Variants do not need twelve URLs
Size and color are usually options on one product. Shoppers pick a variant; checkout uses that SKU. You do not need a separate indexable product for every size.
Split into separate products when content, warranty, shipping, or legal claims actually differ (different care, different power specs, different “what’s included”). Variant setup: how to add product variants in Shopify.
Theme and app URL parameters for selected variants can create extra URLs. Shopify’s canonical tags are meant to point at the representative product URL. Do not invent a custom canonical scheme without reading the checklist’s variant and Google ecommerce URL notes. Default robots.txt already limits some crawl noise; do not edit robots.txt.liquid without a documented need.
Make the product crawlable
A product that exists only in admin search is not in the storefront graph. Link it from at least one published collection with ordinary <a href> cards. Collection SEO: optimize collection pages. Do not hide the only path behind a storefront search box.
Hiding from search engines while keeping the product live is a special case (seo.hidden or unlisted). Shopify documents it in hiding a page from search engines. Use it on purpose, not as a substitute for a draft status.
Common mistakes
- Pasting the supplier PDF into every SKU.
- Twelve products for twelve sizes of the same shirt.
- Alt text that repeats the title five times.
- Changing handles weekly.
- Installing an SEO app to generate duplicate meta. Native fields first; apps: best Shopify SEO apps.
What to do next
Finish titles, descriptions, and listings on live SKUs. Then collections. Hub: Shopify 101. Pillar: Shopify 101 complete guide.
Product SEO fields are merchant work. If you later need template-level structured data or theme output checked across a catalog, AalphaLeo Digital Solutions can review rendered pages. They should not invent unique copy you have not verified against the product.
Frequently asked questions
Does every product need a unique description?
Write a description that serves this product. Do not paste the manufacturer paragraph every competitor uses. Unique wording is not a ranking trophy; useful facts and a crawlable collection path still matter. Details: the product and collection SEO checklist.
Should each variant have its own URL?
Usually no. Variants live on one product URL. Split products only when they are different selling units in practice.
How long should the meta description be?
Long enough to preview the page. Shopify notes that long fields can truncate. Search engines may show a different snippet. Do not treat a character count as a ranking rule.
Where do I put keywords?
In the title and naturally in the opening if the words are true. Then write for the buyer. Mapping: Shopify keyword research.
