How to Add Products to Shopify

Add a Shopify product the durable way: title, description, media, price, SKU, inventory, shipping weight, status, type, and vendor. Draft first. CSV later, not a dump of bad data.

A Shopify store is not a theme. It is a catalog that can be priced, stocked, and shipped. Adding products is a durable admin job: Products → Add product. Labels move; the fields do not. Field-level clicks belong in Shopify Help Center: adding and updating products. This tutorial is the sequence for a first honest SKU.

If the store itself is not created yet, start with how to create a Shopify store. Keep Shopify terminology open for words like SKU, variant, collection, and location.

Quick answer

Open Products, click Add product, and fill title, description, media, price, SKU, inventory, shipping/weight, status, plus product type and vendor if you use them. Save as Draft until photos, price, and quantity are true. Publish Active only when you would sell that unit tomorrow. Do not CSV-import a spreadsheet of placeholders. One real product beats fifty empty rows. Collections and tags come after the SKU exists: how to create collections in Shopify and Shopify product tags.

What you need before you add a product

  • A store with country, currency, and address already set. Map that in how to set up Shopify store settings.
  • One item you can photograph, weigh (if you ship physical goods), and price.
  • A SKU code you will actually pick from a shelf or packing list.
  • Password still on until checkout works. Launch is later: how to launch a Shopify store.

Step 1: Title and description

The title is what customers and search engines see first. Use the name a buyer would search, not an internal warehouse nickname. “Merino crewneck — forest green” is usable. “SKU-441-A NEW” is not.

The description should say what the product is, who it is for, and what arrives. Write original copy. Shopify has long warned that pasted manufacturer text is duplicate content. How to write it: how to write product descriptions that sell.

Step 2: Media

Add at least one clear photo. White-background and one lifestyle shot is enough for a first SKU. Crop consistently. Set alt text that describes the image, not a keyword dump. Details: how to optimize Shopify product images. Help Center media jobs: product media.

Step 3: Price, compare-at, and tax

Enter the price customers pay. Compare-at price is for a genuine sale or list price you actually used—not a fake “was $999.” Tax depends on your store settings and Markets. Do not guess tax from a YouTube video.

Step 4: SKU, barcode, and inventory

SKU is your internal code. Make it unique per sellable unit. If the product will have sizes or colors, you will need a SKU per variant—see how to add product variants in Shopify. For a simple product, one SKU is enough.

Turn Track quantity on if you have a real count. Enter the number you can ship today, not a hope. Inventory habits: how to manage Shopify inventory.

Step 5: Shipping and weight

If the product requires shipping, mark it as a physical product and enter weight in the unit your shipping rates expect. Checkout quotes fail when weight is blank or invented. Digital goods and services skip weight; still say how delivery works in the description.

Step 6: Product type, vendor, and organization

Product type (for example “T-shirt” or “Mug”) and vendor (the brand or supplier) help filters, reports, and some automations. They are not decoration. Use names you will repeat, not one-off spellings.

Tags and collections are how the storefront groups products. Do not skip them forever, but do not block the first SKU on a perfect taxonomy. Tutorials: Shopify product tags and how to create collections in Shopify.

Step 7: Status — draft vs active

Shopify lets you save a product as Draft, Active, or (in current admin) Unlisted. Use Draft while photos, price, or quantity are unfinished. Active means it can appear in sales channels you selected. Do not set Active on a product named “Example T-shirt” with quantity 999.

Password-protected stores still hide the storefront from the public. That is not an excuse to publish junk SKUs. The launch checklist expects real products.

One honest SKU before bulk

Add one product you would pack this week. Photograph it. Weigh it. Price it. Track inventory. Then duplicate or add the next. Catalog depth is a later cluster in the Shopify 101 complete guide. Launch needs truth, not a wall of drafts.

CSV import exists for later. Use Shopify Help Center: product CSV when you have clean titles, prices, and image URLs. A CSV of bad data is still bad data—only faster. Test a few draft rows before you import hundreds.

Common mistakes

  • Publishing Active with a placeholder title and stock photo you do not own.
  • Skipping weight so shipping rates cannot calculate.
  • Reusing one SKU across sizes.
  • Importing a supplier spreadsheet without rewriting descriptions.
  • Installing a bulk-edit app before you understand the product form.

What to do next

Work through the Shopify 101 category. After the first SKU: variants if you need them, then images and copy that a buyer can scan. Page layout and SEO are separate jobs: how to design high-converting Shopify product pages, how to optimize Shopify product pages for SEO, and the Shopify SEO checklist for category and product pages.

Frequently asked questions

Should new products start as draft or active?

Draft until title, photo, price, and inventory are honest. Active when you would fulfill an order for that SKU. Unlisted (when your admin shows it) is for a URL you share without putting the product in navigation.

Do I need variants to add a product?

No. A product with one sellable unit needs one title, one price, one SKU. Add options only when size, color, or similar choices are real. Tutorial: how to add product variants in Shopify.

When should I use a CSV import?

After you can add one product by hand and the columns make sense. CSV is a bulk tool, not a shortcut around missing photos and fake stock. Follow Shopify’s current CSV template in Help Center.

Can I add products before payments and shipping are set?

Yes. The catalog can exist while Settings is unfinished. You still should not turn the password off. Finish settings, then the launch checklist, then launch.
