Shopify product images are media on the product: photos, and sometimes video or 3D. The admin path is Products → [product] → Media. Labels move; the jobs stay. Follow Shopify Help Center: product media for upload limits and current file types. This tutorial is how to shoot and prepare files so the storefront is usable—not a claim that a certain file size “ranks #1.”

Add the product before you obsess over a 12-image gallery: how to add products to Shopify. Copy still has to match what the photo shows: how to write product descriptions that sell.

Quick answer

Shoot a clean white (or consistent studio) hero plus one lifestyle shot that shows scale. Crop the same way across the catalog. Write descriptive alt text (what is in the frame), not a keyword list. Compress so files are heavy enough to look sharp and light enough to load on a phone. Assign variant images when color or style actually looks different. Do not stamp a watermark across the product. Shopify serves images through its CDN after you upload; you still choose sane originals. Pixel-perfect theme layout is a later design job: how to design high-converting Shopify product pages.

New store? Create it first: how to create a Shopify store. Currency and policies live in store settings.

White background and lifestyle

White or consistent studio shots make a collection grid look like one brand. Shoppers compare color and cut. Mixed kitchen lighting in every thumbnail trains them to bounce.

Lifestyle shows scale and use: the bag on a shoulder, the mug in a hand, the lamp on a real table. You do not need a fashion campaign. You need one honest context frame.

Shoot extra angles: back, detail, in-pack contents if that is what arrives. Hide nothing that would cause a return.

Consistent crop

Pick an aspect ratio your theme actually uses for the product card and stick to it. If one SKU is a tiny object in the middle of the frame and the next is cropped to the edges, the collection looks accidental. Center the product. Leave similar padding. Do not rotate some thumbs 90 degrees “for fun.”

Reorder media so the hero is the image you would put in an ad. Variants can override that hero when the shopper picks a color—set those in the variant editor: how to add product variants in Shopify.

Alt text that describes the image

Alt text is for people who cannot see the image and for when the file fails to load. Shopify’s Help Center treats it as a short description of the image and the product (CSV docs also cap length; keep it brief). Write what is in the photo: “Forest green merino crewneck, front view on a hanger.” Do not write “buy merino sweater cheap shopify product images SEO.”

The same rule applies in the Shopify SEO checklist for category and product pages and how to optimize Shopify product pages for SEO. Alt text is not a second description field. Tags are not alt text either: Shopify product tags.

File weight: upload sane files

Shopify will transcode and serve images from its CDN. That does not mean you should upload a 40 MB camera RAW or a 12,000-pixel scan. Help Center documents maximum pixel dimensions for product images; stay inside those limits. Export JPEG or another format Shopify accepts, with enough resolution for zoom on a modern phone, without packing noise and extra metadata you do not need.

A slow gallery on mobile is an operations problem. It is not fixed by installing a random “image optimizer” app on day one. Compress before upload. Check the live product page on your phone, not only the admin thumbnail.

Variants need their own images

If Color is an option, the swatch and the gallery must show that color. Reusing the navy photo on the ochre variant is how you generate returns. Assign media per variant in the product editor as Help Center describes.

If two “colors” are actually different products (different SKUs, different care), split them rather than stretching one gallery. Inventory still has to be true: how to manage Shopify inventory.

No watermarks that hide the product

A small, discreet credit in a corner is a brand choice. A logo slapped across the garment, or stock-site watermarks you never licensed, hide the thing you sell. Do not use images you do not have rights to. “For mockup only” photos should never be Active on a live SKU.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing aspect ratios in one collection.
  • Alt text that repeats the title five times.
  • Uploading huge files and assuming the CDN makes weight irrelevant.
  • One photo for every color variant.
  • Publishing before the first SKU is real. The launch checklist expects products you would ship. How to launch a Shopify store is not “turn the password off on placeholder JPEGs.”

What to do next

Keep Shopify terminology open (media vs files vs CDN). The Shopify 101 complete guide and the Shopify 101 category place this next to catalog and SEO tutorials.

You can photograph a first catalog without a studio retainer. If you want help building product templates and media rules across many SKUs, AalphaLeo Digital Solutions offers Shopify store setup. Phone / WhatsApp: +91 9288621081. Optional. Clear photos are not.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify automatically compress my images?

Shopify processes and serves product media through its CDN. You still upload files within Help Center limits and at a reasonable weight. Garbage in stays ugly, only cached.

How many images does a product need?

Enough to show the object honestly: hero, back or reverse, detail, and one lifestyle if scale matters. A simple SKU can launch with two good photos. A fashion item may need more angles. Do not pad the gallery with duplicates.

Should I put keywords in the file name?

A readable file name does not hurt. It is not a ranking strategy. Alt text and the product title matter more for humans. See the SEO checklist.

Can I use supplier packshots?

Yes if you have the right to use them and they match what you ship. Rewrite the description anyway. If every competitor uses the same three photos, add one original shot so shoppers know you handled the product.
