A/B testing is a hypothesis, one change, two experiences, and enough orders (not ten sessions) to tell signal from noise. It is not a button-color ritual and not a guaranteed lift. Shopify documents Rollouts (including experiments that split visitors between a control and a treatment) under Markets → Rollouts. Plan availability, permissions, and what you can test (theme vs checkout and accounts) live in Rollouts Help—confirm there before you assume your plan includes traffic-split experiments. Shopify Plus is not required to start a simple test. A testing app is not required either. Duplicate-theme and before/after methods exist on ordinary plans. This guide will not invent a winning lift percentage.
Tie tests to a real leak in the conversion funnel and the CRO growth framework. Measure with Shopify analytics.
Quick answer
Write: “If we change X for this audience, Y (add-to-cart / checkout completion / revenue per session) will move because Z.” Duplicate the live theme (duplicating themes) and make only that change, or create a Rollout experiment if Help and your admin offer it for your plan. Run through full weeks, covering weekday and weekend mix. Do not call a winner on day two. Do not test button color on 10 sessions. If native experiments are plan-gated in your store, you can still ship a careful before/after or use an app—you do not need Plus to learn.
Hypothesis, one change, one primary metric
A hypothesis names the page, the mechanism, and the metric. “Make it pop” is not a hypothesis. “Move shipping estimate above add to cart because people bounce when postage is a surprise; primary metric = sessions with cart additions / product views” is.
One change means one decision: copy, or block order, or a shipping snippet—not a new theme plus a new app plus a sale. If both variants “win” for different reasons, you learned nothing.
Primary metric should be close to the change (cart rate for a PDP, checkout completion for checkout). Secondary: AOV, conversion rate, revenue per session. Watch contribution, not vanity. A variant that discounts its way to conversion is not a UX win.
Three ways to run the test (confirm in Help)
1. Theme duplicate (any plan that can duplicate themes) Online Store → Themes → Duplicate. Edit the copy. Preview. This is how you build a variant safely. Publishing the copy to 100% of traffic is a before/after, not a simultaneous A/B: seasonality and ads will confound it. You can still learn if the change is a broken variant picker versus a tiny color tweak. Limit: 20 themes in admin.
2. Native experiments (Rollouts) A rollout is a scheduled set of changes to the main theme and/or checkout and customer accounts. Shopify distinguishes a launch (show the change to a share of visitors) from an experiment (compare treatment to control). Create and manage from Markets → Rollouts. Read creating a rollout and requirements and considerations in that Help section: experiments are plan-gated; Shopify’s documentation has required Grow or higher for experiments—verify on the live Help page and in your admin. That is not the same as “Plus only.” Checkout experiments may have extra constraints. Vintage themes and some Liquid-only edits may be out of scope; Help lists what Rollouts can and cannot change.
3. A testing app Use when you need price tests, audience segments, or goals Rollouts and a theme duplicate cannot do. One app. Apps are scripts and monthly cost. They are not a prerequisite for a first test.
Plus checkout extensibility is a different product from “can I test a headline.” Do not wait for Plus to fix a shipping line on the PDP.
Duration and sample size honesty
Do not test button color on 10 sessions. The “winner” is a coin flip. You need enough conversions on the metric you chose that one bulk order cannot decide it. There is no FACTASH magic N.
Low traffic: test large repairs (broken CTA, missing rate, unreadable price), not tiny copy tweaks. Run at least one full week (two if volume is thin). Do not stop on the first green day. Do not keep going until it wins. Annotate a sale that hits only one side.
Calculators need your baseline and a minimum detectable effect. If weekly orders cannot show a large relative move, they cannot show a color test. Arithmetic from traffic and sales—not a FACTASH sample-size rule.
GA4 and Shopify will disagree on sessions; pick one source for the test readout and stick to it. GA4 setup.
What not to test first
Button color on almost no traffic. Four upsell apps (AOV is merchandising and margin). Checkout fields your plan cannot edit. Prices you cannot fulfill.
Fix the product page leak you already see. Ad creative is a marketing test, not a theme test.
Common mistakes
- Two changes, one conclusion.
- Calling a winner after a weekend of ads.
- Testing on staff IPs and preview links only.
- Ignoring mobile.
- Treating a Rollout launch at 10% as a full A/B readout without reading experiment analytics as Help describes.
What to do next
List one funnel leak. Write the hypothesis and primary metric. Duplicate the theme or open Rollouts and confirm what your plan allows in Help. Hub: Shopify 101. Money metrics after UX: CAC, LTV.
If you need experiment design plus theme variants (not a promised lift), AalphaLeo Digital Solutions does Shopify design and CRO-related storefront work. Phone / WhatsApp: +91 9288621081. Optional. Ten sessions still will not decide a button.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Shopify Plus or an A/B app to start?
No. Duplicate a theme and change one thing, or use Rollouts if your plan includes experiments. Plus and apps are for capabilities you do not have—not a gate to a first test. Confirm Rollouts experiment eligibility in Shopify Help.
How long should a test run?
Long enough to cover a weekly pattern and enough conversions that one order cannot flip the result. Stopping on the first green day is how false winners ship.
Can I test checkout without Plus?
Shopify Checkout is hosted. Rollouts can include checkout and accounts configurations where Shopify enables that for your store—confirm in Help. Apps and Plus extensibility are separate. Start with storefront leaks you can edit in the theme editor.
What if traffic is too low for A/B?
Ship the obvious repair (broken variant, missing shipping, unreadable price). Use before/after with honest caveats. Save color tests for when volume exists.
