Shopify admin’s Settings area is where the store becomes a business: name, address, payments, shipping, taxes, checkout, and notifications. Theme colors are not settings. If you skip this map, checkout and emails will expose empty or wrong data. Screens move; the jobs below stay. Use Shopify Help Center when a label in your admin does not match this page.

Quick answer

Open Settings and complete, in order: store detailsbilling / planpaymentsshipping and deliverytaxes (or Markets tax) → checkoutcustomer accountsnotificationsdomains when ready. Keep Online Store → Preferences password on until the launch checklist is done. Do not install apps to “configure settings.”

Why this order

Payments need a real address and legal name. Shipping needs the same address as the warehouse you actually ship from. Checkout needs payment methods that exist. Notifications need a customer email that you read. Designing the homepage first trains you to launch an empty cash register.

Settings map (first week)

Work top to bottom. Skip POS, checkout extensibility, and custom apps until the store can take one order.

Store details

Legal and customer-facing identity: store name, customer email, phone, store address. Details: business information in Shopify.

Plan and billing

Know whether you are on a trial, a promotion, or list price. Card on file for paid plans. Tutorial: choose the right Shopify plan.

Payments

Shopify Payments if offered; otherwise a supported gateway. Complete payout identity. Test mode vs live is a payments decision, not a theme decision.

Shipping and delivery

Zones, rates, or local pickup. Profiles if you have products that ship differently. You cannot “finish settings” without a way to quote delivery.

Taxes

Enable the tax setup Shopify offers for your region, or follow their Markets tax tools. This is not tax advice. Wrong rates are your problem, not the theme’s.

Checkout and customer accounts

Set up Shopify Checkout: require shipping address, tips, order processing, marketing opt-in language that matches your policy. Choose customer accounts (classic, new customer accounts, or guest) based on what Shopify currently offers in your admin.

Markets, currency, language

Currency and language live increasingly under Markets. Do not add ten countries on day one.

Notifications

Settings → Notifications. Put a human inbox on order confirmation and shipping. Preview the templates. Replace placeholder store name.

Domains

After the name is stable: buy or connect a domain.

Customer privacy / cookies

If Shopify shows a privacy or cookie banner setup, configure it to match your privacy page. Do not copy a competitor’s policy.

Apps and sales channels

Remove demo channels you will not use. Every channel is another place to keep inventory true.

Online Store preferences (not inside Settings)

Online Store → Preferences: store password, Google Analytics if you are ready (later tutorial), and title/meta defaults. Password on = not launched.

What you can ignore in week one

  • Custom checkout branding on Plus
  • Advanced report customizations
  • Gift cards until you have a reason
  • A full app stack for upsells, reviews, and popups

Common mistakes

  • Store address in the wrong country.
  • Customer email that goes to a full inbox you never open.
  • Shipping from an address that is not the warehouse.
  • Turning password off because Settings “looked complete.”
  • Pasting another store’s tax configuration.

What to do next

Add important pages, then one product, then a test checkout. Full sequence: create a Shopify store. Map: Shopify 101 complete guide.

Frequently asked questions

Where did “Store details” go in the new admin?

Shopify rearranges Settings. Search admin for “store name” or “details.” The Help Center search is faster than a 2023 screenshot.

Do I need to fill every Settings item?

No. Fill every item that appears on an order, invoice, or customer email. Leave Plus-only and unused channels alone.

Can staff change Settings?

Depends on permissions. Do not give theme freelancers billing and payout access.

Is Locations part of settings?

Yes—inventory locations. Set the location you ship from before you promise two-day delivery.
