Shopify’s plan names are a feature list plus processing rates, not a personality test. Choose the lowest plan that includes the jobs you need this quarter, then revisit when staff seats or card fees hurt. Full tables and fee notes live in Shopify pricing and plans. This page is the decision method. Figures are from Shopify’s public US table on shopify.com/pricing as of 29 August 2026.
Quick answer
Start on Basic if you are a solo operator, Shopify Payments is available, and you do not need extra staff logins. Move to Grow when you need listed staff seats, stronger analytics Shopify puts on that tier, or the card-rate step pays for itself at your volume. Choose Advanced when you need features Shopify attaches to that tier (for example live third-party shipping rates in that table) and the math still holds. Choose Plus when you need Plus checkout, volume, or commercial terms—not because the name sounds serious. Ignore $1 promotional months in the model.
What you need before choosing
- Business country (local prices and Shopify Payments).
- Shopify Payments vs another gateway (third-party fees on Shopify were 2% / 1% / 0.6% / 0.2% by Basic / Grow / Advanced / Plus on that US table).
- How many people need admin access.
- Whether you sell in person (POS Pro was $89/month per location on that table).
- Honest card volume. Zero sales: pick the cheapest plan that includes Online Store, then re-run the math after you have orders.
The four plans, as jobs
| Plan | US list (29 Aug 2026) | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39/month or $29/month yearly | Solo, Shopify Payments, small catalog, no extra staff seats required |
| Grow | $105 or $79 yearly | You need extra staff accounts or the 2.7% + 30¢ rate beats staying on Basic |
| Advanced | $399 or $299 yearly | You need that tier’s tools (shipping rates, more staff) and volume supports it |
| Plus | from $2,300/month | Checkout extensibility, high volume, expansion stores, Plus support/API—not vanity |
Online Shopify Payments standard card rates on that table: 2.9% + 30¢ (Basic), 2.7% + 30¢ (Grow), 2.5% + 30¢ (Advanced). Plus listed “most competitive rates.” Additional staff accounts: not listed for Basic; 5 Grow; 15 Advanced; unlimited Plus. Inventory locations: 10 on Basic/Grow/Advanced; 200 on Plus in that table.
Shopify Help Center documents localized Plus pricing separately. Complex businesses get quotes. See Shopify Plus plan.
Do the card-rate arithmetic
Subscription is visible. Processing is often larger.
Example method (not a FACTASH forecast): monthly card volume × rate difference vs the next plan, plus the 30¢ per order × order count. If the savings exceed the subscription delta, upgrading can be rational. If you have ten orders a month, it usually does not. Use your average order value.
If you use a third-party gateway “to save money,” add Shopify’s extra transaction fee before you celebrate.
Staff, reports, shipping tools
Read Shopify’s current comparison grid for:
- Staff accounts
- Report / analytics language they attach to each tier
- Third-party calculated shipping rates (listed as add-on on Grow, included on Advanced/Plus in that 2026 table)
- Checkout customization (limited until Plus)
If a feature is an add-on, price the add-on. Do not assume it is “in Shopify.”
Retail and POS
Casual POS and POS Pro are different products. Do not buy POS Pro for a laptop at a weekend market unless you have confirmed you need those features. Plus listed a bundle of locations on that US table; still confirm in admin.
Promotions vs list price
On 29 August 2026 Shopify advertised 3 days free, then $1/month for 3 months on most plans, plus credits that vary. Those offers change and may need a card. Is Shopify worth it in 2026? is the margin question. This page is which SKU of Shopify to buy.
Common mistakes
- Choosing Grow because a blog said “serious brands start there.”
- Prepaying yearly on day one with the wrong country or store name.
- Ignoring third-party transaction fees.
- Buying Plus to “look big.”
What to do next
Create the store on a trial: how to create a Shopify store. Pick the plan inside Settings → Billing when Shopify requires it. If hosted vs WordPress is still open, read Shopify vs WooCommerce.
Plan choice is arithmetic. Custom theme work is a different invoice. AalphaLeo Digital Solutions (+91 9288621081) can help with a build after you know which plan you are on.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change plans later?
Shopify’s pricing FAQ states you can change subscription level in admin. Plus can bind you to a term. Read what you click.
Should I start on Grow to get better card rates?
Only if volume makes the rate delta larger than the extra subscription. Many first stores should start on Basic.
Does yearly billing change the features?
It changes the per-month price in the table, not the feature grid. Cancellation rules are in Shopify’s terms.
What if Shopify Payments is not in my country?
Plan using a supported gateway plus Shopify’s third-party fee. Availability is not universal. Check Shopify Payments for your country before you assume Basic’s 2.9% + 30¢ applies.
