Technical SEO on Shopify is whether Google can find, fetch, and understand the pages you actually want in search: public URLs, HTTPS on the primary domain, HTML Google can use, sane pagination, and correct international signals if you use Markets. It is not a secret crawl-budget hack, a robots.txt poem, or a promise that Core Web Vitals “rank you.” Shopify already generates canonicals, sitemap, robots.txt, SSL, and product structured data—see the SEO overview and SEO Help Center. You still configure the store so those files describe a public, useful catalog.
This page is the map. Deep tutorials:

On-page copy still lives in Shopify SEO for beginners. Schema eligibility: structured data.
Quick answer
Turn the store password off only when you intend to be public. Set the primary domain to HTTPS. Submit /sitemap.xml in Search Console. Leave default robots.txt unless you have a written exception (sitemap and robots.txt). Confirm product canonicals. Do not buy a crawl-budget app. Google’s crawl budget notes are for large or extremely chatty sites—not a 200-SKU theme tweak.
Indexation (can Google keep the URL?)
Indexation fails for boring reasons first: password page, noindex, robots disallow, thin collections, duplicates. Walk the diagnostic in indexing issues. Search Console’s Page indexing report is the log; “Crawled — currently not indexed” is a quality/selection message, not a robots.txt puzzle by default.
Sitemaps hint. They do not override noindex or a locked store.
HTTPS and the primary host
Shopify activates SSL for the connected domain. Your job is one primary hostname so http and the unused www/apex variant redirect. Google: HTTPS. Setup: connect a domain. Mixed content (theme loading http:// scripts) is a theme/app problem, not a “get the HTTPS ranking boost” checklist item.
JavaScript and what Google actually gets
Online Store 2.0 themes send HTML. Apps and sections can still push important content behind client-side rendering. Google can render JavaScript, with limits and delay (JavaScript SEO basics). Prefer product title, price, and unique copy in the initial HTML. Do not hide the only unique collection paragraph in a slider that never appears in View Source.
If View Source is empty of the words you care about, URL Inspection’s rendered HTML in Search Console is the next check. App piles: too many Shopify apps.
Pagination
Large collections split into ?page=2 (or theme equivalents). Google’s ecommerce guidance covers pagination and incremental loading. Make sure page 2+ is crawlable with 200s and links from page 1—not only infinite scroll that never exposes a URL. Do not canonical every page to page 1 if the products on page 2 are not on page 1. Do not noindex paginated pages as a default “SEO trick.”
Faceted navigation (filters)
Search & Discovery filters create many URLs. Shopify’s default robots.txt already disallows some filtered collection patterns. That is crawl hygiene, not a ranking lever. Strategy: faceted navigation. Duplicate collection copy: duplicate content.
Hreflang and Markets
If you sell in multiple languages or country domains via Shopify Markets, Shopify can emit hreflang (and related alternate links) so Google can group locales. Google’s spec: localized versions. Verify in View Source on a live market URL. Do not stack a second hreflang app that disagrees with Markets. Incomplete language tags and self-referencing errors are worse than the default. Currency-only differences are not automatically a new language.
This guide will not invent a Markets setup that ranks you worldwide.
Speed and Core Web Vitals (pointer)
Lab scores and field CrUX data are measurements. They are not a conversion rate and not a guaranteed ranking jump. Google’s Core Web Vitals page is the definition. Practical Shopify work (images, apps, theme JS) is Shopify Core Web Vitals. Mobile templates: Shopify mobile SEO and make the store mobile-friendly.
Measurement: Search Console and GA4
Technical SEO without Search Console is guessing. Verify the property, submit the sitemap, use URL Inspection (Search Console for Shopify). GA4 tells you what humans did after the click (GA4 for Shopify). Neither tool “optimizes robots.”
What this page will not sell you
- A crawl-budget plugin for a small catalog.
- Invented Core Web Vitals numbers.
- “Google loves this Liquid snippet.”
- Rich results as a ranking guarantee (schema).

Self-serve covers password, domain, sitemap submit, and default robots. When the job is a broken custom theme (duplicate JSON-LD, wrong canonical host, Markets/hreflang conflicts), a Core Web Vitals pass on a script-heavy storefront, indexation cleanup after a migration, or AI-search eligibility that still starts with crawlable unique pages (optimize Shopify for AI search and the operator guide Shopify AI search optimization), that is professional work.

Frequently asked questions
Is Shopify good at technical SEO out of the box?
It covers SSL, sitemap, robots, and canonicals as Shopify documents. You still launch a public store, write unique pages, and measure in Search Console. Themes and apps can undo that.
Should I worry about crawl budget on Shopify?
Usually no, until you have a huge URL space (faceted filters, parameters, or a very large catalog). Google’s crawl-budget documentation is not a small-store playbook. Fix duplicates and filters first.
Does faster Shopify always rank higher?
Speed can affect user experience and is part of how Google talks about page experience. It is not a substitute for indexable unique content. Use the CWV tutorial; do not invent scores.
Where do I start if nothing is indexing?
Indexing issues—password first. Then Search Console. Then copy and thin collections.
