Shopify Structured Data and Schema Markup Explained

Shopify themes output Product and Offer JSON-LD. Extra FAQ schema is optional. Validate in Google’s Rich Results Test. Markup is eligibility, not a ranking guarantee.

Structured data (schema / JSON-LD) describes a page for machines: this is a product, this is the price, this offer is in stock. Shopify themes already emit Product plus Offer on typical product templates. Inspect that before you install anything. Shopify documents built-in structured data in the SEO overview and the SEO manual.

Google’s rule is eligibility, not a ranking promise. Markup that matches the structured data introduction and the Product type can make a URL eligible for rich results. Google still decides whether a rich result appears. Do not invent review stars.

Quick answer

View source on a live product (password off). Find <script type="application/ld+json">. You should see Product and Offer fields that match the page: name, URL, image, price, currency, availability. Run the same URL in Google’s Rich Results Test. Fix mismatches (wrong price, missing offer, duplicate graphs) before you add FAQ schema with an app. Never output AggregateRating or Review markup unless real, eligible reviews exist on that page. Google’s review snippet guidelines forbid self-serving and fake ratings.

What Shopify already outputs

Current Theme Store / Online Store 2.0 themes typically serialize product JSON-LD in the product template. Shopify’s sitemap help also notes that supported themes include structured data for price and availability. You do not paste Schema.org by hand on day one.

What you still own:

  • Accurate product data in the admin (title, price, images, variant availability). Markup copies what the storefront shows.
  • One graph per job. Theme JSON-LD plus an SEO app that injects a second Product block is a defect. See best Shopify SEO apps for JSON-LD extras as a category, not a ranked list.
  • Visible content that matches the markup. Google’s general structured data guidelines require the markup to describe what the user can see.

Collections, blog posts, and policy pages are not automatically “Product” rich-result pages. Do not force Product schema onto a collection.

Product and Offer fields that matter

On a product URL, the useful check is: does the JSON-LD describe this product and this offer?

Typical fields (names vary by theme):

  • @type: Product
  • name, url, image, description
  • offers / Offer: price, priceCurrency, availability, url

Variants usually share one product URL. The Offer should not show in-stock if the page shows unavailable. Recheck JSON-LD after custom template edits. Canonical URLs still pick the preferred product URL; schema does not replace a canonical.

Apps that add FAQ (and other) schema

Shopify does not give you a native “FAQ rich result” switch. Some SEO or FAQ apps add FAQPage JSON-LD. That is optional. Google’s FAQPage documentation requires the questions and answers to be visible on the page. Hidden FAQ markup is a policy problem, not an optimization.

Use an app only when:

  1. The theme does not already output the type you need.
  2. The FAQ (or how-to steps) is real storefront content, not a keyword dump in a script tag.
  3. You can uninstall without leaving a second ld+json block.

Organization, BreadcrumbList, and WebSite markup appear in some themes. Extra types do not boost rankings. Duplicate graphs help nobody. Scripts still cost speed: too many Shopify apps.

Do not invent review stars

Review and AggregateRating markup is where stores get into trouble. Google documents that review snippets must reflect genuine reviews that follow the review snippet rules. Do not:

  • Hard-code "ratingValue": "5" in the theme.
  • Mark up testimonials you wrote yourself as third-party reviews.
  • Let an app emit stars when the product has zero reviews.

If you use a review app, confirm it writes markup only when reviews exist and does not duplicate the theme’s Product graph. Stars in search are still Google’s call.

How to validate

  1. Publish a product on a public store (password off). Markup on a locked store is not what Googlebot will fetch.
  2. Open the product URL. View source or use the browser’s network panel and search for ld+json.
  3. Paste the URL into the Rich Results Test. Prefer the live URL over a snippet if the theme hydrates anything after load.
  4. After Search Console is verified, inspect the same URL. Rich-result reports lag and are not a ranking dashboard.
  5. Product errors (missing offer, invalid price): fix admin data or the theme—not a second schema app.

Prefer JSON-LD in the theme’s initial HTML. Google’s JavaScript SEO basics cover rendered markup.

Common mistakes

  • Installing three schema apps because a video equated rich snippets with page-one.
  • Copying a competitor’s JSON-LD (brand, SKU, and all).
  • FAQ schema on collections with no visible FAQ; fake review markup “to look complete.”
  • Breaking Product JSON-LD in Liquid, then blaming Google.

What to do next

Keep product copy unique; markup will not save duplicate manufacturer text. That job is how to fix Shopify duplicate content. Technical crawl and index work sits in Shopify technical SEO. Hub: Shopify 101 category. Operator docs: Shopify SEO.

You can check JSON-LD without an agency. If a custom template has broken Product markup and you want it repaired in the theme, AalphaLeo Digital Solutions does Shopify store work. Phone / WhatsApp: +91 9288621081. Optional. Valid Offer data is not.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify schema make my products rank higher?

No. Schema is a way to describe the page. Google may use valid, eligible markup for rich results. Rankings are a separate system. Shopify and Google both describe markup as understanding and eligibility, not a ranking lever.

Do I need an app for Product JSON-LD?

Usually no, if your published theme already outputs Product and Offer. Check View Source and the Rich Results Test first. Apps are for gaps (FAQ, extra types) after that check. Shortlist roles in best Shopify SEO apps.

Can I add FAQ schema to a product page?

Only if the FAQ is visible on that product page and the markup matches it. Google’s FAQPage type is for pages that actually answer those questions. Invisible FAQ JSON-LD is not a workaround.

Why does the Rich Results Test show no rich results?

The test reports eligibility and errors, not what will show in live search. Invalid markup, missing required Product/Offer properties, or a type Google does not enhance for that page will fail or show as ineligible. Even a valid test is not a guarantee the enhancement will appear.
