“Worth it” is a margin question, not a slogan. Shopify is worth the invoice when hosted checkout and admin cost less than the alternatives you would actually run—self-hosted WooCommerce, a builder, a marketplace-only setup, or not selling online. This page cites Shopify’s public US pricing table from shopify.com/pricing on 29 August 2026. Promotions change. Features change. Confirm on Shopify’s site before you sign a yearly term.

Quick answer

Shopify is worth it in 2026 for businesses that need a hosted store, can pay list-plan plus processing, and will operate catalog and fulfillment. It is not worth it if you model the $1 promotional month as the real price, if extra apps and a third-party gateway erase margin, or if you only needed a marketplace listing. On that US table, Basic was $39/month ($29/month yearly), Grow $105 ($79 yearly), Advanced $399 ($299 yearly), Plus from $2,300/month, with Shopify Payments online rates from 2.9% + 30¢ (Basic) down to 2.5% + 30¢ (Advanced). Third-party gateways added 2% / 1% / 0.6% / 0.2% Shopify transaction fees on those four tiers. Do the arithmetic with your average order value and your card volume.

What you are paying for

You are not paying for traffic. You are paying for:

  • Hosted storefront and admin
  • Shopify Checkout
  • Platform updates and TLS for domains you connect
  • Access to Shopify Payments where available
  • App and theme ecosystems (you still pay those vendors)

Shopify is not a guarantee of sales. What Shopify is and how Shopify works spell out the split between platform and merchant work.

2026 cost stack (US public table)

Figures below are from Shopify’s comparison table, USD, 29 August 2026. Local prices differ.

Basic$39$292.9% + 30¢2%
Grow$105$792.7% + 30¢1%
Advanced$399$2992.5% + 30¢0.6%

Other lines that change “worth it”:

  • Staff accounts (not listed on Basic in that table; 5 on Grow; 15 on Advanced).
  • POS Pro at $89/month per location if you need it.
  • Apps, email, SMS, labels, paid themes.

Shopify’s page also advertised a 3-day free trial then $1/month for 3 months on most plans, plus marketing credits that vary. Put list price in the spreadsheet. Full notes: Shopify pricing and plans.

A simple worth-it test

Use numbers you have, not a blog’s imaginary store.

  1. Contribution after product cost. If a $60 product costs $20 to buy and $8 to ship, you have $32 before ads and Shopify.
  2. Shopify variable cost. On Basic Shopify Payments, 2.9% + 30¢ on $60 is about $2.04, plus subscription allocated per order.
  3. Demand cost. Ads, SEO time, or marketplace fees. Shopify does not replace this line.
  4. Alternative cost. WooCommerce hosting + plugins + your time to patch, or marketplace referral fees.

If step 2 + 3 still leaves a business you want to run, Shopify can be worth it. If step 2 alone kills the product, no platform is “worth it” until the offer changes.

This is not a FACTASH benchmark. It is homework.

When it is worth it in 2026

  • You need a URL you control and a checkout you do not assemble from five plugins.
  • Shopify Payments is available and the card rate is acceptable at your AOV.
  • You will launch with policies, shipping, and a real catalog—see the launch checklist.
  • You are comparing against real alternatives, not against “free.”

When it is not worth it (yet)

  • You have no products, no photos, and no shipping method. A trial teaches admin; it does not create a company.
  • You refuse to model processing fees.
  • You need Plus features and have not priced Plus.
  • A marketplace already takes the sale and you have no brand reason to add a store this year.

Shopify vs “just using Instagram”

Social checkout tools change. A Shopify store is still the catalog and order system you own if the social channel changes terms. That can be worth the subscription even at low volume if you value the customer record. It is not worth it if you will never fulfill off-platform orders.

What to do next

If the fee math works, create an account and keep the password on. Choose a plan with how to choose the right Shopify plan. If hosted vs WordPress is still the fork, read Shopify vs WooCommerce. Map the rest of setup in the Shopify 101 complete guide.

Frequently asked questions

Did Shopify get more expensive in 2026?

Plan names and prices change. Use the date-stamped table above and re-open shopify.com/pricing in your market. Do not rely on a screenshot from 2024.

Is yearly billing worth it?

The US table showed a lower per-month rate on yearly. That is only “worth it” if you will keep the store and you accept Shopify’s cancellation rules for prepaid terms.

Are apps required to make it worth it?

No. Many first stores need payments, shipping, and a theme. Add an app when a job is blocked, not when a YouTube list says “best 20 apps.”

Will AI search or Shop make Shopify more “worth it”?

Those are distribution bets, not a refund of your subscription. Optimize the store you can operate. Operator-depth AI search notes live in FACTASH’s Shopify category, not as a ranking promise here.
