How to Fix Shopify Indexing Issues

Shopify pages not in Google: check Online Store password first, then noindex, robots.txt, Search Console “crawled not indexed,” thin collections, and duplicates. Sitemap is a hint, not a fix.

If Google is not showing your Shopify products, check the Online Store password before you touch schema, apps, or “crawl budget.” A password-on store is not a public website. Shopify serves a gate. Crawlers do not get your catalog. Shopify’s SEO overview assumes a store you intend search engines to fetch; the SEO manual is the rest of the operator map.

This is a diagnostic how-to: password → noindex → robots → Search Console “Crawled — currently not indexed” → thin collections → duplicates. Beginner SEO: Shopify SEO for beginners. Technical map: Shopify technical SEO. Console setup: how to set up Google Search Console for Shopify.

Quick answer

Online Store → Preferences (wording moves): if “Restrict access” / password is on, turn it off only when you mean to launch (launch checklist, how to launch). Then fetch https://your-primary-domain/products/your-handle in an incognito window without logging in. If you still see the password page, Google will too. After the store is public, verify Search Console, submit sitemap.xml, and inspect a URL. “Crawled — currently not indexed” is often thin or duplicate pages, not a missing app.

Google’s Page indexing report lists why URLs are excluded. Read the reason; do not invent a ranking trick.

Step 1: Password store (do this first)

Shopify lets you hide the storefront with a password while you build. That is correct for development. It is incompatible with indexing.

  1. Open Online Store → Preferences.
  2. Find the password / restrict-access control. Shopify documents the password page in Help Center (theme password page / preferences—follow the current Help Center SEO and Online Store manuals).
  3. If the store must stay private, stop. Do not submit sitemaps expecting rankings.
  4. If you intend to be public: password off, test in a private browser, confirm HTTPS on the primary domain.

Staff login cookies fool you into thinking the catalog is public. Incognito is the test.

Step 2: noindex (theme, apps, metafields)

A robots noindex (meta tag or HTTP header) tells Google not to keep the URL even if it can crawl it (robots meta tag). Shopify password pages and some apps add noindex. Custom Liquid in theme.liquid can noindex the whole shop by accident.

Check:

  • View source on the live product: noindex in <meta name="robots"> or X-Robots-Tag.
  • SEO apps that “hide collections from Google.”
  • Template-level noindex on collection or blog templates you actually want indexed.

Removing noindex does not force indexing. It only removes an explicit block.

Step 3: robots.txt blocking

Open /robots.txt. Shopify’s default Disallow list blocks admin, cart, checkout, search, some filtered collections, and generated policies (editing robots.txt). That is expected. It is not why /products/handle is missing.

A custom robots.txt.liquid that Disallow: /products or Disallow: / will. Restore Shopify defaults (sitemap and robots.txt). Google: robots.txt introduction—disallow means “don’t crawl,” not “rank less.” Already indexed URLs may linger until recrawl.

Step 4: Search Console — crawled, not indexed

After the property is verified (Search Console tutorial):

  1. URL Inspection on a product you care about. See fetch status, user-declared canonical, Google-selected canonical, and whether indexing is allowed.
  2. Page indexing (coverage) report. Group reasons: excluded by noindex, blocked by robots, not found, duplicate, crawled currently not indexed, discovered currently not indexed.

Crawled — currently not indexed means Google fetched the URL and chose not to keep it (for now). Common Shopify causes: thin default collection text, duplicate manufacturer copy, near-identical collections, doorway-like tag pages. Google does not owe you an index slot. Fix uniqueness (duplicate content), then request indexing only for URLs that deserve it. Do not bulk-request thousands of tag collections.

Discovered — currently not indexed often means Google knows the URL but has not crawled it yet, or is deprioritizing a large low-value URL set (filters, parameters). Facets: faceted navigation. Crawl budget is not the first lever on a small store (Google crawl budget; technical SEO).

A sitemap submit is a hint (find-site-map). It does not override password, noindex, or thin duplicates.

Step 5: Thin collections and duplicate URLs

Empty or default collections (All products with no unique paragraph, one product, cloned intros) are weak landing pages. Automated collections from every tag multiply them.

Fix IA: fewer collections with a job, unique titles and copy (create collections). Product-in-collection URLs should canonical to /products/handle (canonical URLs). Manufacturer clones: rewrite (product descriptions).

Step 6: Fetch, status codes, and apps

URL Inspection → test live URL. 404/410 will not index (HTTP status and crawlers). 5xx delays crawl. App or theme bugs that serve 404 for valid products are a development defect.

JavaScript-only content: JavaScript SEO. Prefer unique copy in HTML. App overload: too many apps. SEO app shortlist (not a ranking fix): best Shopify SEO apps.

What to do next

Password off. Inspect one product in Search Console. Fix noindex/robots mistakes. Improve thin and duplicate URLs. Then speed and mobile in the technical cluster. Hub: Shopify 101 category.

You can run this checklist without an agency. If a custom theme noindexes the shop or Markets URLs 404, AalphaLeo Digital Solutions can debug the theme. Phone / WhatsApp: +91 9288621081. Optional. Turning the password off is not.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn’t my new Shopify store on Google?

If the password is on, it cannot be indexed as a storefront. If it is off, wait for crawl, submit the sitemap, and inspect a URL. New sites are not entitled to immediate full-catalog indexation.

Does submitting the sitemap force indexing?

No. Google’s sitemaps overview treats sitemaps as discovery aids. Password, noindex, and low-value URLs still lose.

What does “Crawled — currently not indexed” mean?

Google fetched the page and did not add it (yet). Improve uniqueness and usefulness; check duplicates and thin collections. See Google’s Page indexing documentation.

Should I noindex all collections to help products rank?

No. That removes category landing pages shoppers search for. Noindex specific utility URLs if needed; do not hide the catalog’s IA. Collection quality: unique copy, not a blanket robots trick.
