Choosing Shopify apps is a procurement job, not a shopping spree. Name the job, check whether Shopify already does it, then—if you still need a vendor—trial one listing and read its scopes. Shopify’s operator manual is apps. Definitions first: what are Shopify apps. Job-based shortlists (not rankings): best Shopify apps for ecommerce stores and best Shopify SEO apps.

Do not choose apps to “increase conversion.” Apps add scripts, bills, and failure modes. Speed cost is covered in how too many Shopify apps can slow down your store. Finish creating the store and the launch checklist before you install anything optional.

Quick answer

One job per app. Prefer Search & Discovery, Shopify Email, customer events / Shopify Pixel, and built-in SEO fields before the App Store. Run the trial. Read permissions. Do not install a second app that does the same job. Confirm Online Store 2.0 app blocks or embeds on your published theme. Add monthly plus usage plus Shopify’s plan—not the listing headline alone. Uninstall leftovers when you say no.

Step 1: Name one job

Write the job in a sentence: “Publish customer photos on the product template,” “Send a post-purchase email from our list,” “Filter the catalog by size.” If the sentence contains “and also,” you are shopping two apps. Theme layout is theme customization, not an app.

If the store does not have that job yet, skip the category. Subscriptions apps belong on stores that sell subscriptions. Wholesale lock apps belong on stores that sell wholesale. Installing “in case” is how stacks get slow.

Step 2: Native Shopify first

Before you open the App Store, check whether Shopify already ships the job:

  • Search and filters: Search & Discovery.
  • Email: Shopify Email.
  • Tracking / ads pixels: customer events / Shopify Pixel.
  • SEO titles and descriptions: search engine listing fields on products, collections, and pages.
  • URL redirects: Shopify’s built-in redirect list (path in Help Center; labels move).

If native covers the job, stop. Third-party is for a gap, not a brand preference.

Step 3: Trial one listing

App Store trials exist so you can fail cheaply. Install on a duplicate unpublished theme when the app injects storefront UI. Test the job on mobile and desktop. Time how long support answers a real question. If the trial needs a sales call before you can test, treat that as a cost.

Listings change in 2026. Do not pick from a screenshot in an old blog post. Open the live App Store page.

Step 4: Read permissions (scopes)

The install screen lists what the app may read and write. Match scopes to the job. Write access to orders, customers, or theme files needs a reason you can explain. An over-scoped “free” app is not free; it is access. Shopify’s apps manual covers reviewing installed apps—use current admin paths there.

Step 5: Reject duplicates

Two reviews apps, two popup apps, two “upsell” apps, two search apps: pick one and uninstall the other. Duplicates fight over the same template, double the JavaScript, and split your data. Search & Discovery plus a third-party search app is a duplicate unless you have a documented gap Search & Discovery cannot fill.

Step 6: Check theme compatibility

Confirm the app supports theme app extensions (app embeds and app blocks) on Online Store 2.0. If it still asks you to paste code into theme.liquid, you are buying uninstall pain. Preview the block on your actual product and collection templates, not the developer’s demo theme. A Dawn-compatible listing can still break a heavily customized third-party theme.

Step 7: Cost vs subscription (and usage)

Add:

  1. Shopify plan (pricing).
  2. App monthly fee.
  3. Usage (emails, SMS, orders, extra seats).
  4. Time to maintain it.

A $9/month app with a usage meter can outrun a higher flat fee. Yearly prepay locks you to a vendor you have not uninstalled yet. Prefer monthly until the job is proven. There is no conversion-rate payoff line on this invoice.

After you decide no

Uninstall, disable the app embed, delete leftover blocks, and check pixels. Incomplete uninstall is how “we only have five apps” still ships ten scripts. Details: what are Shopify apps and too many apps.

Common mistakes

  • Installing a stack before the first paid order.
  • Choosing from a “top apps” list instead of a named job.
  • Skipping the trial because a YouTube thumbnail looked busy.
  • Ignoring scopes.
  • Paying Klaviyo-class usage before trying Shopify Email.
  • Using an SEO app as a substitute for unique collection copy.

What to do next

Curriculum: Shopify 101 complete guide, Shopify 101 category. If the job is merchandising search, set up Search & Discovery before a search vendor. If the job is SEO copy, use the product and collection SEO checklist before an SEO app.

Frequently asked questions

How many apps should a new store have?

Zero extra apps until checkout works. Then one named job. There is no virtuous number after that—only jobs you can defend. See the launch checklist.

Should I install free apps to “try everything”?

No. Free still means scopes, scripts, and leftover data. Trial the one job. Uninstall the rest.

What if two apps both look fine?

Keep the trial that answers support, updates the listing in 2026, and uses app blocks. Uninstall the other the same week. Do not run both “for a month to compare” on the live theme.

Do paid apps convert better than free?

No. Price is not a conversion rate. Paid can mean a real support desk; it can also mean a usage trap. Measure the job (reviews published, emails delivered), not a promised lift.
