Shopify alt text is the alternative text on a media item. It describes the image (or other media) when the file does not display and when assistive technology reads the page. Shopify’s operator steps are in Adding alt text to media. Help Center says alt text can support SEO and that it should stay brief and descriptive. This tutorial is how to write it: descriptive, not keyword stuffing, and how product media differs from theme images.
Alt text is not a second product description field and not a ranking formula. Pair it with sane files and crops: Shopify image SEO and how to optimize Shopify product images. Product-page context: how to optimize Shopify product pages for SEO. Storewide SEO map: SEO.
Quick answer
Products: Products → open the product → click a media item → Add alt text (or edit existing) → save. Write what is in the frame: color, product type, angle, one distinguishing detail. Shopify documents a 512-character maximum and recommends 125 or less. Collections, pages, and blog posts: set alt where that editor or theme exposes it (collection image, rich-text image, theme customizer). Theme icons and decorative backgrounds: empty or minimal alt so screen readers are not spammed. Do not paste the same keyword string on every photo.
Accessibility and SEO together
Alt text exists so a shopper who cannot see the image still knows what it shows. That is the accessibility job. Search engines may use alt as one of many image-related signals. Stuffing “buy cheap merino sweater SEO” into alt helps neither audience: it is noisy for screen readers and looks like spam.
Help Center also notes that if media fails to load, alt text can show instead. That is a fallback for everyone, not only assistive tech.
Leave alt empty (or mark decorative in the theme, if the theme supports it) when the image adds no information—dividers, purely ornamental patterns. Informative product photos should have real alt.
Product media vs theme images
Product media lives on the product: Products → [product] → Media. Each image, and often video posters, can have its own alt. Variant-specific photos need alt that matches that color or style, not the default navy shot reused in words.
Click path (desktop, as Help Center describes): open the product, click the media item to preview, Add alt text, enter text, Save alt text. Mobile uses the product media preview Information path. Labels move; Help Center is source of truth.
You can also supply alt in a product CSV when Shopify’s import columns support image alt. Use CSV for bulk updates only if you are comfortable with import rules; a bad import overwrites data. Admin remains the check for a sample of SKUs.
Theme images (logo, homepage banners, collection template artwork, icons) are not the product Media library. They are set in the theme editor, theme settings, or section image pickers. Many Online Store 2.0 themes expose an alt field next to the image. If a banner is informative (“Summer linen sale”), describe it. If it is decorative, do not write a paragraph of keywords.
Collection featured images are on the collection resource, not the product. Pages and blog posts often set alt when you insert or edit an image in the rich text editor. Check the live page: theme Liquid decides whether alt is rendered.
Apps that inject galleries can override or omit alt. Audit the rendered HTML, not only admin.
How to write descriptive alt
Describe the image in the context of the page.
Good: Forest green merino crewneck, front view on a hanger.
Good: Black 20-litre commuter backpack with laptop sleeve open.
Bad: merino sweater merino sweater buy merino cheap Shopify alt text SEO.
Bad: repeating the full product title plus every collection name.
Include:
- Product type and obvious color or material if visible.
- Angle or state (front, back, on-model, detail of a zipper) when the gallery has several shots so they are distinguishable.
- What the image actually shows—not a claim the photo does not support (“waterproof” on a studio packshot that cannot show rain).
Do not:
- Start every alt with the store name.
- Dump SKUs, GTINs, or price.
- Use alt as a dumping ground for product tags.
The Shopify SEO checklist for category and product pages uses the same rule: describe the image; skip stuffing.
Length
Help Center: maximum 512 characters; 125 or less is recommended. Screen readers and snippets benefit from a short sentence, not a specification sheet. If you need specs, put them in the product description HTML.
Common mistakes
- Blank alt on every hero image.
- Identical alt on six gallery photos.
- Keyword lists and competitor brand names the photo does not show.
- Writing alt only in a speed or SEO app while the theme outputs empty
alt="". - Treating decorative theme chrome as products.
- Skipping collection and blog images after finishing product media.

What to do next
Add alt on homepage-visible products and collection images first, then the rest of the catalog. Confirm alt= in page source. Keep Shopify 101 open for adjacent tutorials. Internal linking still has to reach those product URLs.
You can fill alt text in admin without an agency. If you want help setting media rules across a large catalog, AalphaLeo Digital Solutions offers Shopify store setup and SEO support. Phone / WhatsApp: +91 9288621081. Optional. Descriptive alt is not.
Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify generate alt text automatically?
Not by default for product media. You add it in admin, CSV, or an app. Empty alt means assistive tech may skip or announce a useless filename.
Is alt text a ranking factor?
It can help search engines understand an image. It is not a switch that ranks the product page by itself. Useful page content and accurate titles still matter: meta titles.
Should decorative images have alt text?
They should not get a keyword essay. Empty alt (or a decorative pattern your theme supports) is appropriate when the image adds no information.
Can I bulk-edit alt text?
CSV import is the native bulk path when columns match. Apps exist; they are optional. Always spot-check the live alt attribute after a bulk job.
