Shopify’s URL structure is fixed prefixes plus an editable handle. Products live under /products/, collections under /collections/, and pages under /pages/. Blog posts use /blogs/{blog}/{article}. You do not invent a custom folder tree the way you might on a self-hosted CMS. Shopify documents handles in SEO. This page is how to choose handles, when not to change them, and how Markets subfolders differ from wanting /shoes/ as a product path.
Do not change handles after indexing without redirects. Broken inbound links and lost bookmarks are an operations problem. Shopify usually offers a redirect when you change a published handle; keep it unless you have a deliberate reason not to. Canonical tags are related but not the same job: Shopify canonical URLs explained.
New to storefront SEO? Shopify SEO for beginners. Product and collection optimization still happens on those URLs: how to optimize Shopify product pages for SEO and how to optimize Shopify collection pages for SEO.
Quick answer
Set a short, hyphenated, lowercase handle before you promote the URL. Leave Shopify’s prefixes (/products/, /collections/, /pages/) alone. Prefer readable words over SKU soup. After the URL is live and linked, treat a handle change as a migration: accept Shopify’s redirect, add extra redirects if old paths exist, and update important internal links. For multiple countries or languages, use Shopify Markets (subfolder, subdomain, or domain as Shopify documents)—do not hack fake subfolders in handles. Confirm the live path and canonical in page source.
What you control vs what Shopify fixes
You control the handle (the last segment). Shopify controls the resource type in the path.
Typical patterns:
- Product:
https://www.example.com/products/linen-shirt - Collection:
https://www.example.com/collections/linen-shirts - Page:
https://www.example.com/pages/shipping-policy - Product inside a collection (theme-dependent):
.../collections/linen-shirts/products/linen-shirt
That last form often still represents the same product. Shopify’s automatic canonicals are meant to reduce duplicate indexing. Do not install a random app that rewrites every product to /shop/category/product unless you understand crawlers, redirects, and theme output. Audit the rendered storefront, not only admin.
Handles sit in Search engine listing (or the resource URL field) with titles and descriptions. Current clicks: Help Center and adding keywords.
How to write a handle
- Lowercase letters, numbers, hyphens.
- Match how people name the thing, not an internal code, unless buyers search the code.
- Keep it stable. A handle is a permalink, not a slogan you refresh every campaign.
- Avoid stuffing every keyword.
mens-waterproof-hiking-shoes-best-buy-onlineis worse to maintain thanwaterproof-hiking-shoes. - Do not put spaces or punctuation you would not want in a shared link.
The product title can be longer than the handle. Keep the handle short enough to type. If you rename a collection for merchandising, the display name can change while the URL stays.
Do not change live handles without redirects
Once Google, ads, emails, or other sites have the URL, a handle change is a URL change.
When you edit a published handle, Shopify typically prompts to create a URL redirect from the old path to the new one. Use it. Then:
- Check Online Store → Navigation → URL redirects (label may vary; Help Center is source of truth) for the new rule.
- Update header and footer menus, collection descriptions, and blog posts that still point at the old path.
- Avoid redirect chains (A → B → C). Point old URLs at the final destination.
- Do not delete a product or collection and recreate it with a “prettier” handle without mapping the old URL.
Redirects preserve a path for humans and crawlers. They are not a ranking guarantee. They stop 404s you caused yourself.
If you migrate from another platform, import redirects in bulk rather than hoping old .html paths resolve. That is a launch job, not an SEO trick.
Subfolders vs Markets (brief)
Merchants sometimes want example.com/en/ or example.com/uk/ for language or country. That is international / Markets configuration—subfolders, subdomains, or separate domains as Shopify documents for your setup—not a handle like products/uk-linen-shirt pretending to be a locale.
Do not encode market in every product handle if Markets already prefixes the path. Duplicate handles across markets are a Markets problem, not something you fix by inventing a second /products/ tree in Liquid.
If you sell in one country, you likely do not need subfolders. One primary domain, stable handles, and canonical behavior are enough for a first store. Use Shopify’s Markets docs for the rest.
Filters, variants, and extra parameters
Collection filters and some apps append query strings. Variant URLs depend on the theme. Do not change global canonical logic without mapping what the storefront actually outputs.
Internal links should point at the product URL you want indexed, not a temporary filtered collection path, unless that filtered page is a real collection you created on purpose.
Common mistakes
- Changing handles weekly to “add keywords.”
- Declining Shopify’s redirect prompt on a live SKU.
- Expecting
/products/to become/shoes/without a custom (and fragile) rewrite. - Using Markets subfolders and also stuffing country names into every handle.
- Leaving old ad and email URLs unmapped after a rename.
Titles and descriptions sit on these URLs: meta titles and meta descriptions. Audit list: Shopify SEO checklist for category and product pages.
What to do next
Lock handles on products and collections you will advertise. Then check menus so links match those paths: Shopify internal linking. More Shopify 101: category.
You can set handles in admin without an agency. If you need a URL and redirect map for a migration or Markets setup, AalphaLeo Digital Solutions offers Shopify store setup and SEO support. Phone / WhatsApp: +91 9288621081. Optional. Stable URLs are not.
Frequently asked questions
Can I remove /products/ from Shopify URLs?
Not with a simple handle edit. The resource prefix is part of Shopify’s URL structure. Custom permalink schemes need expert theme or app work and careful redirects. Most stores should keep the default.
Does Shopify create a redirect when I change a handle?
For published resources, Shopify typically offers one. Confirm it was created. Add more redirects if other old paths still exist.
Should I put keywords in the handle?
Use readable words that match the page. Do not treat the handle as a ranking string. Title, content, and internal links matter more for shoppers.
What about collection/product nested URLs?
They can exist alongside /products/handle. Rely on Shopify’s canonicals unless an audit shows a real duplicate problem. See canonical URLs.
