Google Ads for a Shopify store is a public URL, a catalog Google can trust, and conversion tracking that matches Shopify purchases—then campaigns you will actually pause. It is not a bid-strategy novel, a promised ROAS, or spend on a password page. Shopify’s current path for Google tags and conversions is the Google & YouTube sales channel (and related Google Help). Admin labels move. Follow your Shopify admin plus Google Ads: conversion tracking with Google & YouTube on Shopify and Shopify’s Google & YouTube documentation. Do not scale while Online Store → Preferences still requires a password. Complete checkout, the launch checklist, and launch first.

Quick answer

Connect Google & YouTube. Link the Google Ads account that will spend. Confirm purchase (and only the conversion actions you intend to bid on) fires once per paid order—same order ID you see in Shopify. Fix the Merchant Center / Shopping feed: title, price, availability, and landing URL must match the live product. Split brand search from non-brand / Shopping so you do not congratulate yourself for bidding on your own name. Use GA4 as a second view, not a second purchase tag on the same Google tag. One ads platform you can staff; Meta is a different tutorial: Facebook and Instagram ads. Hub: Shopify 101 category.

Tracking must match Shopify purchases

Google will optimize to whatever you mark as a conversion. If that event is add_to_cart, page view, or a double purchase, Smart Bidding learns the wrong job.

  1. Install or open Google & YouTube as Shopify currently documents.
  2. Link Google Ads. Complete conversion setup in the channel so purchase maps to checkout completed—not a custom pixel that also fires purchase to the same account.
  3. Place a test order (Shopify’s documented test methods or a small live order you refund). In Google Ads, confirm one conversion, value in a plausible currency, and an ID you can match to the Shopify order.
  4. Remove leftover gtag in the theme, old additional scripts, and a GTM container that also sends purchase to the same conversion action. Dual tagging is the usual “ROAS looks amazing / terrible” bug.
  5. Refunds and cancels will never match Ads 1:1 unless you import them as Google currently allows. Do not invent a blended ROAS to hide the gap.

Customer events / pixels: extra destinations only. Do not add a custom Google Ads pixel on top of the channel for the same conversion. Pixels overview.

Shopping feed accuracy

Shopping and Performance Max (when you use them) read the product feed. Wrong price, “in stock” when you have zero, or a URL that 404s gets disapproved or wastes clicks.

  • Titles and GTINs as Google’s product data spec requires for your category—not keyword stuffing.
  • Availability and price sync from Shopify; if you override in Merchant Center, you own the drift.
  • Landing pages must be the public product URL after password-off.
  • Shipping and return policy in Merchant Center must not contradict shipping and policy pages.

This article will not walk every Merchant Center diagnostic. Fix the SKUs you will advertise. Thin collections are an SEO job: Shopify SEO for beginners.

Brand vs Shopping vs non-brand

Brand search (your store name) is demand you already earned. It is useful to capture, expensive to confuse with prospecting. Keep it in its own campaign or clearly labeled ad group so you can see cost separately.

Shopping is the catalog. It needs feed hygiene and products people can buy this week.

Non-brand search is queries you do not own yet. Start narrow (exact/phrase on products you fulfill), landing on the matching product—not the homepage. Do not copy 200 competitor terms on day one.

Performance Max mixes surfaces. If you cannot read a Search Terms report you trust, do not make PMax the only campaign until brand and Shopping are understood. This is not a Smart Bidding textbook: pick a bid method Google documents, give it conversion data that is true, and wait longer than one afternoon.

Budget and staffing

Staff one Google Ads account. Do not also launch Meta the same week unless a second person owns it. Creative and offers still need margin: discount strategies. Email remains a channel you can run without media: email marketing. Checkout friction before more spend: checkout conversion, CRO framework.

Common mistakes

  • Spending on a password store or a theme preview URL.
  • Two purchase tags.
  • Bidding on brand and calling it “growth.”
  • Shopping ads for out-of-stock SKUs.
  • Changing bid strategies daily because yesterday’s ROAS screenshot moved.
  • Treating Ads-reported revenue as Shopify payouts.

What to do next

Public store. One clean purchase conversion. Clean feed for the SKUs you will sell. Brand separated from Shopping/non-brand. Then look at Search Terms weekly. Pillar: Shopify 101 complete guide. Apps are not a substitute for the Ads account: best Shopify marketing apps.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need Merchant Center to run any Google Ads?

Search campaigns can run on a website conversion. Shopping and many catalog formats need Merchant Center and a valid feed. Follow Google’s current campaign-type requirements.

Should I import GA4 conversions into Google Ads?

Only if they are the same purchase, not a duplicate of the Google & YouTube purchase action. Dual counting poisons bidding. See GA4 for Shopify.

Can I run Google Ads before launch?

You can build accounts. Do not send traffic to a password page and call it a test of the offer.

What ROAS should I target?

This article will not invent one. Use contribution after product cost, ads cost, and fees in your books. Platform ROAS is an attribution view, not a bank balance. Recovering checkout on owned traffic: abandoned carts.
