A Shopify store name is the brand string customers see in the browser, emails, and checkout. It is not the same as the myshopify.com hostname or the custom domain. You can rename the store later. You cannot cheaply undo a trademark fight or a domain you do not own. This is not legal advice; it is an operations checklist.
Quick answer
Pick a name you can say, spell, and register. Check that a matching domain is available or already yours, that the name is not a clone of a known brand, and that the myshopify.com handle is free when you create the store. Put the same words in Settings → Store details and in your logo. Leave puns and trending slang out unless you will still like them in three years. Then create the store and connect the domain when you are within a week of launch.
Three names, not one
| Name | Where it lives | How hard to change |
|---|---|---|
| Store name | Admin, emails, some invoices | Easy in Settings |
| myshopify.com | your-handle.myshopify.com | Painful; treat as permanent working URL |
| Custom domain | What you want customers to type | DNS work; see connect a domain |
People will type the domain, not the admin label. Align all three when you can.
Rules that keep you out of trouble
- Spellable. If you have to say “that’s two Fs,” ads and support get expensive.
- Empty of someone else’s mark. Search the web, app stores, and your country’s trademark database for the exact name and close spellings. A theme demo named “Dawn Fashion” is not a brand you should copy.
- Domain first. If
yourname.comis taken by a squatter or a different company, pick another name before you print packaging. - Social handles. Optional on day one. Nice if Instagram and the domain match. Not a reason to invent an unreadable string.
- Honest category. “Boston Leather Co.” if you are not in Boston and do not sell leather will confuse more than it ranks.
Shopify’s admin will accept many strings. The law and customers will not.
How to shortlist in one hour
- Write what you sell and who it is for in one sentence.
- List 15 names that are real words, compounds, or your surname plus product (example: “River Street Goods”).
- Kill anything you cannot trademark-search without cringing.
- For each survivor, check domain availability at a registrar you already use—not a random “name generator” that upsells.
- Say the name on a phone call. If the other person emails the wrong spelling, drop it.
- Check the myshopify.com handle only after the domain is plausible. Handles get taken; a taken handle is annoying, not a reason to keep a bad brand.
What not to optimize for
- Keyword stuffing (“BestCheapShopifyShoesOnline”).
- Copying a competitor with one letter changed.
- Emoji or special characters in the legal name.
- A name that only works in one language if you already know you will sell in two.
SEO for a store is product and collection pages, not the poetry of the brand. See the Shopify 101 SEO cluster when those tutorials are live; the complete guide maps that work.
After you choose
Set the name in Settings → Store details. Use it in the theme header. Put it on policy pages. If you registered a company under a different legal name, that legal name still belongs on invoices and business information. Brand and legal entity are allowed to differ; hiding the legal entity is not.
Common mistakes
- Naming the store after a product you will stop making.
- Buying five domains “to be safe” and launching on none of them.
- Changing the public name every month. Checkout emails will look like a scam.
- Using a personal nickname you will not put on a packing slip.
What to do next
Create the account: how to create a Shopify account. Connect DNS in the domain tutorial. Keep the launch checklist nearby before password-off.
Naming does not require an agency. If you later need a full brand and theme system, AalphaLeo Digital Solutions (+91 9288621081) can help. Do the availability checks yourself first.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change my Shopify store name later?
Yes, in store details. Update the theme, email notifications, and any printed material. The myshopify.com URL does not automatically follow.
Does the store name affect Google ranking?
Not as a magic keyword. Consistency and a matching domain help people recognize you. Rankings come from pages, not from stuffing “Shopify” into the brand.
Should the name include “shop” or “store”?
Only if it sounds like a brand you would put on a box. “Shop” in the domain is optional.
What if the .com is taken but .shop is free?
You can use another TLD if you will market that URL everywhere. Many customers still type .com. Decide whether you will buy the .com later or live without it.
