Google Search now includes generative features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode on queries where Google chooses to show them. SEO did not become a different profession. The inputs Google documents are still indexable pages, useful content, and crawlable structure. What changed is the result layout and the set of reports you might watch.
What Google says these features need
Google’s page on AI features and websites says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to be used as a supporting link. It also says there are no additional technical requirements for those features.
The generative AI optimization guide tells publishers to focus on people-first content, technical foundations, page experience, useful media, and Search Console measurement. It discourages llms.txt and AI-only markup as Google Search requirements.
None of that guarantees an Overview, a supporting link, or a click.
How operations should change
Inventory the questions around a topic. Overviews can assemble related subtopics. Your site should cover the real task and the legitimate follow-ups with distinct pages, not twenty near-duplicates.
Prefer one canonical URL per job. Conflicting canonicals and parameter sprawl waste crawl attention. See the technical SEO checklist.
Write original synthesis. Restating a help center does not become “AI SEO” because you added the letters AI. Google’s people-first content questions still apply.
Measure with the reports you have. Use Search Console as documented. Do not invent a “citation rate” FACTASH did not collect. If Google adds or changes AI-feature reporting, treat the new columns as observations, not proof of a tactic.
What not to do
- Buying “AI Overview packages” that promise placement.
- Stuffing FAQ schema on pages without FAQs.
- Rewriting every title to include “2026 AI.”
- Blocking CSS and JavaScript that the page needs to render.
