Shopify’s platform and App Store include features and apps that use machine learning or generative models. Names and availability change. This guide does not rank apps, publish conversion lifts, or invent “best” scores. It explains how a store owner should evaluate AI around catalog quality, theme performance, and operations.
Start with Shopify’s own documentation for the features you actually have enabled. Then apply the Shopify SEO checklist so AI copy does not land on pages that crawlers cannot use.
Merchandising jobs, not magic
Typical jobs:
- draft product descriptions from structured attributes you already store;
- suggest collections or internal search synonyms;
- help write help-center answers from your policies;
- assist theme or email drafts that a person still approves.
If the app wants to overwrite live product content without a queue, that is a process failure waiting to happen.
Catalog truth comes first
Generative text cannot invent shipping rules, inventory, or materials. Feed the model (or the app) the attributes you stand behind. Keep a human check for claims that would be unfair or illegal in your market.
Google’s merchant and product structured-data rules still require that markup match the page. AI that “optimizes schema” independently of visible copy is a defect.
Theme and performance
Apps that inject large scripts hurt interaction and LCP. The JavaScript performance patterns guide applies to storefronts. An AI widget that blocks rendering is not a growth feature.
Data and apps
Read what customer and order data an app requests. Prefer least privilege. Offboard unused apps. The AI cybersecurity page covers vendor sprawl.
A store-owner sequence
- Fix collection and product SEO fundamentals.
- Pick one content job (for example, first-pass descriptions).
- Run a sample of 20 products through a review queue.
- Measure editorial time saved, not a fictional conversion claim.
- Only then consider additional apps.
“Best” on Shopify means the smallest tool that improves a named job without breaking crawlability, claims accuracy, or page speed.
